Digging in the Museum: Discoveries after Excavation

Talk by Dr Adrián Maldonado, Glenmorangie Fellow, NMS

Carnegie Hall, Portmahomack. Organised by Tarbat Discovery Centre. Entry £4

Synopsis:Archaeologist Adrián Maldonado will share new work on old collections of excavated material from early monasteries in Scotland. The excitement of discovering the past comes not only from the time archaeologicaltrenches are open, but in the months and years ahead when scientific techniques allow new questions to be askedof the assemblage. On some rare occasions, older collections even allow for genuine ‘discoveries’ to be made, as objects whose value was not recognised at the time is recognized by students and curators. Adrián will cover recent reappraisals of major sites like Iona, Whithorn and St Andrews to show the value of the Tarbat Discovery Centre to the story of early Christianity in Scotland.

Speaker bio: Dr Adrián Maldonado is Glenmorangie Research Fellow at National Museums Scotland. Hepreviously lectured in archaeology at the University of Glasgow and the University of Chester, where he specialised in early Christianity in Scotland and the archaeology of death and burial. He is currently working on the fourth phase of the Glenmorangie Research Project, entitled Creating Scotland: Making a Nation 800-1200 AD
