Wartime Remains in Easter Ross

Talk by Allan Kilpatrick of the RCAHMS

Cornerstone Cafe, Evanton

This talk will launch ARCH's Evanton Wartime Remains project. The programme will kick off with a lecture by Allan Kilpatrick of the RCAHMS about wartime remains in Easter Ross on 20th Feb 2013. Many of you will have heard Allan speak before, or have been on one of his guided walks during Highland Archaeology Fortnight, so know that his knowledge and enthusiasm for Highland wartime remains is both impressive and infectious!

After this, on Wednesday evenings at the Cornerstone Cafe in Evanton, 7-9:30pm, from February through to July, there will be sessions to explore memories of the wartime remains in the village, to explore archive and other information, and then sessions to create a display and tourist leaflet. There will also be walks and opportunities to record by photograph and GPS some of the many remains still surviving.

We are very lucky that plans and aerial photographs from the 1940s survive, as well as some interesting buildings. All in all it is shaping up to be an exciting few months.

For the reminiscence sessions, all are welcome, whether you remember the wartime years or just want to learn more! We invite people to help write down the memories of those who are contributing, and to help ask questions. Other ARCH reminiscence sessions have shown that they are exciting and highly informative and there is every reason to guess that the Evanton sessions will also be!

If you would like to be kept informed of events, please contact the ARCH office if you have not already done so. Come for some or all of the sessions! If you need help getting to and from the Cornerstone Cafe, do get in touch and we will try to arrange car share or transport.

Excavation: Inchnadamph moated site ...

As an additional part of Historic Assynt´s current Fire and Water Project, Historic Assynt conduct a small excavation at the moated site close to Inchnadamph Church which several NOSAS members helped survey in 2005. As recommended in the report from that survey, the aim will be to put a trench across the moat and platform and see if we can find dating evidence and finds indicative of use. In order to get the work done within the project time-frame we´re going for
18 - 22 February which should ensure a thoroughly waterlogged site, freezing temperatures, howling gales, snow etc etc. Anyone interested in helping with the excavation under these ideal conditions do please get in touch!
