Description:

In 1877, a hoard of nine bronze objects was recovered from a peat bog at Poolewe, Scotland, including axeheads, rings and an ornament. This hoard was probably deposited around 800-600 BC, around the conventional transition from the Bronze Age to the Iron Age. Until recently, the significance of this hoard has never been fully investigated and here I present new research on the hoard, including an overview of the objects, a new radiocarbon date and metallurgical analysis. The place of the hoard in Scotland and Britain is considered and it can be suggested that the Poolewe hoard may in fact represent the last vestiges of the Late Bronze Age hoarding practice in Scotland.
