 ‘Needed on a Journey’: Exhibition Workshops

Ever wanted to get behind the scenes at the museum? Would you like to curate an exhibition at IMAG?
In these workshops you will research and interpret museum objects, practise ‘behind the scenes’ museum work and create an innovative exhibition of previously un-shown objects for display in the First Floor Gallery of the museum during April. The exhibition will then tour throughout the Highlands to locations including the Highland Folk Museum at Newtonmore, Gairloch, Rosemarkie and others.

This roving and evolving exhibition is composed around the theme of migration; journeying and the cultural gifts that people carry with them when moving from their home. This ‘intangible culture’ includes traditions, music, poetry, language, craft skills and lore.

The items we shall be researching and preparing for exhibition include a quilt and travelling trunk that belonged to the MacKintoshes of Farr in the 18th Century, both of which are believed to have associations with their involvement in the East India Company; a Gaelic Pilgrim’s Progress that travelled from the highlands to Belgium and back again; a fiddle made by Alexander Grant and a jet beaded silk apron that travelled from Inverness to Canada and has returned. We shall also be exploring images from the highland Photographic Archive. YOUR role in helping us to tell the stories that the objects included inspire is vital.

The entire project is part of the ‘My Heart is in the Highlands’ 2014 Homecoming initiative collecting new memories, recollections and information about culture in the Highlands, through a programme of storytelling, ceilidhs, craft celebration and community curation.
