Excavations at Vindolanda - the evidence for a frontier constantly in transition

Talk by Andrew Birlie, director of excavations at Vindolanda

Inverness Museum and Art Gallery

Reception 6pm; lecture starts 7pm

Dr Birley will highlight the treasures of Vindolanda and its peoples, look at the evidence from the recent excavations and from this material explore the complexities of life for those who lived in frontier transition. The site, a mile south of Hadrian’s Wall, had at least nine Roman forts and settlements superimposed one above the other before its eventual abandonment. The result is a rich history covering almost 800 years of occupation, leaving evidence from a cast of characters that could grace the script of a modern soap opera.
The Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, promoting the study of Scotland’s past for over 250 years, is working with High Life Highland to deliver this lecture in Inverness.
