 World War I, the Scottish Highlands and Emigration: Symbolism and Substance

During 2014 there were many commemorations of the outbreak and subsequent events of the First World War, including exhibitions in the National Museum of Scotland, Inverness Art Gallery and Museum, and numerous local libraries and history centres across the country. This paper draws on and expands the theme of symbolism and substance embodied in some of those exhibitions, with particular reference to the relationship between the Great War, the Highlands and emigration. It considers issues such as demographic legacies, the land question, the impact of the Iolaire disaster, soldier settlement schemes on both sides of the Atlantic and the anti-emigration rhetoric of the 1920s and 1930s.

Professor Marjory Harper will be presenting her guest lecture as part of the University of the Highlands and Islands Public Lecture Series on March 16th from 5.15pm and will be available for audience questions.
