‘Indelible Characters on the Surface of the Soil: Relics and remnants of Highland Clearance times’

Talk by Professor James Hunter
Inverness Museum and Art Gallery, Room to Discover

In this Lunchtime Lecture, arranged to mark the receipt of the Croick Decanter into the museum’s collections, Professor Hunter will speak about the physical remnants of previous settlement what now appears to be empty landscapes – challenging the popular concept of ‘wild
land’ in the Highlands. The phrase ‘Indelible Characters on the
Surface of the Soil’ was first used by Lord Napier in his report on crofting issues in 1884, referring to the fact that the record of
clearance could be read in the land itself.
Jim Hunter, now Emeritus Professor of History at the University of the Highlands and Islands, was the first Director of the Centre for History and was instrumental in its establishment in 2005. The author of eleven books about the Highlands and Islands, Jim Hunter has also been an evident and active participant in the public life of the area.
