Much of the past has been buried as a result of subsequent changes in the environment and through different use of the land. Geophysical surveys allow us to make new discoveries by examining what lies beneath the surface. In this talk Prof Bates will present recent discoveries using geophysical methods at World Heritage Sites internationally. He will then show how the techniques are being applied to sites closer to home in Orkney and in the Outer Isles at Calanais.
