A tale of two hut circles – shedding new light on the landscapes of the past

Talk by Dr Scott Timpany, Orkney UHI

MacPhail Centre, Ullapool.

Organised by Lochbroom Field Club. The talk will be preceded by light refreshments and the launch of the Final Report of the Wedigs project. £3.00 to non members of Lochbroom Field Club.

Scott very kindly carried out the pollen analysis on soils from two of the sites where the Wedigs teams were digging. Pollen fossilises well in peaty soils and can be identified several thousand years after it was deposited. The ratio of different pollen types allows us to reconstruct the vegetation of the different time periods. Changes from forest to grassland to cultivated ground are all reflected in the pollen record. Comparatively little work had been done in the north-west Highlands so this was a great opportunity to fill in some of the gaps in our knowledge of our ancient landscapes and vegetation in relation to the growth of human activity.
