Talk: Decolonising the Heritage [Helmsdale] ...

08 October 2025

Starts: 10:00
Ends: 11:00

Decolonising the Heritage

Talk by Dr Cat Dunn

Organised by Timespan Museum, Helmsdale. Details from their website.

Curator and researcher Dr Cat Dunn will uncover Scotland’s often-overlooked links to the Caribbean and the British Empire. Her talk will explore how the Highland Clearances were connected to wider patterns of displacement, slavery, and racial capitalism, and why these histories still matter today.

Part of HERITALISE, a major Horizon Europe project exploring the future of digital heritage and rethinking the role of heritage in today’s digital challenges.  While the consortium gathers in Helmsdale for three days of working sessions, on the 8th and 9th of October Timespan is hosting a free public programme of talks, a field visit to the Flow Country UNESCO World Heritage Site, and an evening of food and music. These events invite local communities and visitors to join the conversation and experience how heritage can be mobilised for truth-telling, climate justice, and collective imagination.
