16 October 2024

Starts: 14:00

The collection today represents the rich and varied material and non-material culture from the geographically large area of the Highlands and Islands from the 17th century to recent times.  The emphasis is on rural and domestic life, where representation is through groups of unique, vernacular artefacts including ‘domestic life’ from bakestones to box beds, ‘agricultural’ from subsistence farming through to developed mechanised farming, ‘crafts and trades’ from early wooden looms through to ‘travellers’ items and whisky distilling and ‘vernacular architecture’ from 18th century timber frames to 20th century community kit buildings.

Dig: Brodie Castle ...

16 October 2024

The dig at Brodie Castle near Forres will follow the same format as previous years. Volunteers are sought to help both on the week days to staff the dig and the weekend to help run the open public event (e.g. introducing families to archaeological excavation chatting about artefacts from the dig and helping with logistics/registration etc – as an added incentive we also have a medieval reenactment group with us on Sunday!). Volunteers can choose only to dig if they wish.

Please contact Daniel Rhodes on drhodes@nts.org.uk. Some accomadation is available onsite
