Former literary editor of The Scotsman, Simon Berry tells of how he discovered Alexander Smith, author of A Summer in Skye and a self-educated Victorian poet. His book Applauding Thunder, on Alexander Smith’s work, was published last year. Come and hear the story of how it came about. Signed copies of the book available.

 Skye and Lochalsh in print: A Tour of Scotland and Voyage to the Hebrides, Thomas Pennant, 1772.

Thomas Pennant was a Welsh naturalist and traveller who wrote books on British, Arctic and Indian zoology although he never vsited the Arctic or India! He travelled extensively in Scotland, visiting Skye and Lochalsh during his second tour in 1771.
