Gold in Auriferous Regions, 2450-800 BC
Online talk by Dr Alison Sheridan
Organised by U. of Edinburgh ArchSoc. Bookings on Eventbrite.
This lecture focuses on the spectacular gold ‘bling’ of the Copper and Bronze Ages that has been found in the auriferous (gold-bearing) regions of Britain. The use of gold, and the knowledge of how to exploit and work it, were among the innovations brought to these shores by Beaker-users from the Continent.
But there’s a lot we still need to understand. From where did the gold come? Who made the artefacts, and what drove the way in which the goldworking tradition evolved over the course of the Chalcolithic and Bronze Age? What was its meaning and significance in society?
The results of a recent AHRC-funded project designed to create a research framework and strategy, focusing on these issues, will be presented.
