Are you involved with heritage in your community?

You might be an organiser or you just might enjoy participating, but either way we would like you to join us for a discussion day talking about how communities manage their heritage, and how we should go forward with new ideas for positive change.

Community Heritage Scotland is co-hosting the discussion day with CHArts, who are delivering a major networking project covering all aspects of culture in Argyll.

We will also be joined by a team from University of St Andrews who are working on international community heritage, particularly in Latin America. We will be especially delighted to welcome Samuel Franco from Guatamala, who founded his own museum of Mayan music and is a specialist in intangible cultural heritage.

What is this project all about?

Community Heritage Scotland is a national project aiming to bring about positive change for communities managing their heritage. It is being led from within communities while also working closely with the national lead bodies in heritage. Through these discussion days we can add your voices and views, which are the most important of all.

The Oban discussion day is the second such event to be held in Scotland, and we hope the first of many around the country so if Oban feels too far, we should be coming near to you at some stage.

We will certainly set the world to rights, but we will also come out with a clear understanding of the views of this community which will inform a national strategy in the fullness of time. Please join us if you can!

10.30am Setting the ball rolling.

• Building a new regional network for Argyll. Sarah Frood and Paul Duffy of CHArts.

• Introducing the fabulous new Directory! Jan Bateman of the Scottish Local History Forum.

11.00am Networking Community Heritage: models from Latin America. Keynote presentation from Samuel Franco of International Council of Museums Latin American and Caribbean Regional Alliance (ICOM-LAC), with Karen Brown and Jamie Brown, University of St Andrews and EU-LAC project.

11.30 am Discussion Workshop 1. Round table sessions on defining community heritage and its challenges and opportunities, linking regional and national networks, and community heritage networks worldwide.

12.45pm Lunch and chat

1.30pm Discussion workshop 2. Swopping the discussion subjects round the tables.

3.15pm Tea, cake, and a final round up session.

4.00pm Finish

What will it cost?

Nothing. It is free. But please make sure you either turn up or cancel as tickets are in short supply.

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

The Rockfield Centre is in the middle of Oban, less than 5 minutes walk from the ferry, train and bus. There is paid parking onsite.

What can I bring into the event?

Please bring leaflets and other promotional material, and we should have space for a pull-up banner (or similar) per organisation. We are also keen to show local crafts as our Latin American visitor has a special interest, so please bring examples of your work. Please contact Catherine to say what space you need.
