Megalithic overkill? Rethinking the multiple stone rows of Caithness and Sutherland

Talk by Kenny Brophy, University of Glasgow

Millburn Academy, Diriebught Road Inverness IV2 3QR. Organised by ARCH and Highland Council Historic Environment Team. £5 entry, £2 students. No booking necessary

There are between 25 and 30 multiple stone rows of Caithness and Sutherland, weird prehistoric monuments that consist of dozens of small standing stones set into long rows. In this lecture I will reflect on 150 years of the study of these monuments, and present a re-evaluation of their role and purpose based on my own excavations and fieldwork.
