Only Swords and Horses: A recent Late Bronze Age Hoard from Peebles (the story so far!)

Talk by Emily Freeman (Treasure Trove Unit) with an invited contribution from Matthew Knight (National Museums Scotland)

In June of this year, a metal detectorist uncovered one of the most significant Late Bronze Age hoards ever found in Scotland. Within days of the discovery, the Treasure Trove Unit were on site to excavate the in situ hoard, and what was assumed to be a two-day rescue mission turned quickly into over 3 weeks of excavation. Pieces of horse gear were uncovered, as well as a complete sword in its scabbard. Preservation of organics allowed us to observe aspects of the horse harness that rarely survive. In this presentation we will discuss the series of events from initial discovery to the eventual block lift of the hoard, the importance of the hoard in the context of Late Bronze Age Scotland and Europe, and the next steps in the Treasure Trove process.
