organisation:
ARCH Highland

22 February 2021, Starts: 19:00, Ends: 20:30

Mapping Monuments workshop

Led by Keith Lilley (Queen's University Belfast) and Susan Kruse (ARCH)

NOTE: this is part 2 of a workshop series, with the first workshop on 25/1/2021. Preference will be given to people who have attended workshop 1. Those who did not attend the first workshop must watch the recording beforehand, on the ARCH YouTube channel. If you were not on the first workshop and would like to attend, please email archhighland@googlemail.com

In two linked online interactive workshops, Prof Keith Lilley will guide us through ways of discovering the legacies of the Ordnance Survey (OS) to be found in our local landscapes in Scotland and especially the Highlands. The first of the two workshops focuses on 'desk-top' study using existing and freely accessible online resources that contain really valuable information about the sites and monuments of the Ordnance Survey's historic early field-operations in Scotland. We shall use digital maps and aerial photographs, as well as historical accounts, to discover those places where the Ordnance Survey left a tangible mark on the landscape. Identifying and recording these 'Mapping Monuments' is a first step towards further exploration 'in the field' and so in the second online workshop, Prof Lilley will explore with us the ways we can 'survey the surveyors' through modern archaeological and geographical field-surveying techniques and methods, linking our desk-top study of Ordnance Survey sites and monuments to a field-based study. Again, we shall do this 'virtually' but the idea is that this second online workshop will provide a basis for a subsequent new community heritage project in Scotland that gathers evidence about the early field-operations of the Ordnance Survey to mark and commemorate the bicentenary of the OS's principal trigonometrical survey of Scotland of the 1820s, led by its then Director General, Thomas Colby, 'in the field'.

NOTE: these are workshops, not talks, and limited numbers. Booking on the this workshop implies attendance on 25/1/2021 workshop. The focus will be on sites in Scottish Highlands. Please only book if you have time and interest.
