Alex Morrison : memories of a generous scholar

alex morrisonA conference is being held in Glasgow this Wednesday (2 May) in celebration of Archaeologist Alex Morrison, who died in  October of last year, aged 79.  

His obituary in The Herald stated that Alex 'was a key figure in the development of archaeology at the University of Glasgow and central to establishing the value of rural settlement studies in Scottish archaeology, especially in the Highlands.' He carried out 'important survey work in Dunbeath, Caithness, which recorded a wide range of new archaeological sites from Neolithic cairns to post- medieval settlement remains' and established 'Highland crofting culture as a suitable subject of scholarship.' Alex served on a number of committees, including the Dunbeath Heritage Trust and Auchindrain Trust

Alex Morrison wrote Early Man in Britain and Ireland, which became the standard textbook.

He was a key figure in the development of archaeology at the University of Glasgow and central to establishing the value of rural settlement studies in Scottish archaeology, especially in the Highlands.
