ARCH Digitising Highland Maps and Plans project - volunteers wanted!
15 July 2026
Welcome Claire Boardman, our newly appointed project officer for the Digitish Highland Maps and Plans project. Claire has experience of similar projects and will be overseeing the scanning 17th-28th August.
ARCH Board members Roland Spencer-Jones, Susand Kruse and Alasdair Cameron, helped by Hector Munro, have been contacting museums and estates throughout the Highlands to see if they have maps they would liked scanned on the A0 flatbed scanner we have hired. Responses confirm over 500 maps so far, and we are still chasing some details. Once scanned the high resolution images will be given to owners, and also to the National Library of Scotland maps website where they will be publicly available. More about the project on ARCH website project page.
We are looking for vounteers to help on the scanning days in August, Monday-Friday 9-5 at Highland Archive Centre in Inverness. If you can spare at least two days, please get in touch, either by email on archhighland@googlemail.com or 077888 35466. There will be two main tasks: logging in the maps as they come into the system, and also the physical scanning. For those who can make it, there is a training day on 14th August.
A great opportunity for all map geeks!
