Vikings arrive at the University of the Highlands and Islands

30 May 2012

Orkney round houseHeavy metal is probably not a subject that you would associate with a university course, but the new postgraduate qualification in Viking Studies will allow you to study it to your hearts content.

The course has been developed by the University of the Highlands and Islands Centre for Nordic Studies and includes modules such as Viking History, Runology (the study of Runes) and Vikings in Popular Culture which looks at the way Vikings are portrayed in films, comics, music and the media - that’s where your chance for a bit of heavy metal indulgence comes in!

The Centre for Nordic Studies is based on Orkney and Shetland, but the new MLitt can be studied part or full-time from anywhere in the world using resources such as video-conferencing technology and virtual learning

Enrolment is now open for the first intake of students who will start in the autumn.

For those who want to find out more about Vikings or the new MLitt, the Centre for Nordic Studies is also running week-long summer courses, which are open to all. These take place in Orkney from the 9th to 13th July and Shetland from 23rd to 27th July.
