Jacobite to visit open day at local archaeological dig

08 July 2012

JacobiteOn Sunday 22 July, from 12.00 to 3.30 there will be a visitor from the past at the Foulis Mound archaeological dig near Evanton.

He’s coming to see what has been found out about the site during this year’s community dig, and to share with visitors some experiences from his own lifetime.

He might be feeling a little uncomfortable at the Foulis mound site, as the Munros mustered and coordinated training and billeting of troops for the Government during the Jacobite rebellions. The finds of a gorgeous copper shoe buckle, soldier’s lead stylus and a variety of musket balls all look as though they may be from this period, and that the Foulis mound may have been the focus for the Munro troops’ military training.

Leaders of the community dig, ARCH project officers Lachlan and Lynne McKeggie are looking forward to showing visitors around, commenting, “We’ll be showing visitors some of the highlights of the ARCH dig, and letting people have a go at some of the techniques we use. We’ll have some hidden secrets for children to explore, and we’re bringing along some clay, so that they can have a go at making their own pots and objects.”

To get to to the Foulis dig, turn off the A9 to Evanton and then turn left on to the Old Evanton Road before you reach the village. The layby for parking is on the right, just after you've passed the castle.
