Archaeology - it's not all just trowelling!

22 August 2012

ARCH Highland digging at Foulis MOundHave you ever wondered what happens after an archaeological dig? How do archaeologists make sense of all those soil samples and finds? And what happens to all the sketches and plan drawings made drawing the dig?

Well the good news is that you don’t have to be an archaeologist to find out. Archaeology for Communities in the Highlands (ARCH) project officers, Lachlan and Lynne McKeggie will be sharing their trade secrets at a series of drop in workshops being held in Alness and  Dingwall.

At each session you’ll be able to try your hand at cleaning finds, seeing what the soil samples contain and inking up plan drawings. The workshops are all from 1.00 to 4.00pm and will be in Alness Heritage Centre on Saturday 25 August and Sunday 2 September, and in Dingwall Academy on Saturday 8 and Saturday 15 September. Each workshop is £3.00 or free for low income.

ARCH is also running an archaeological illustration workshop, and the good news is that you don’t have to be any good at art to do it! We’ll teach you the techniques you’ll need to make your own drawings  on Saturday 1 September from 10.00 - 3.00pm in Dingwall Academy. Bring your own lunch. This workshop is £5.00 or free for low income. You’ll need to book for this workshop by contacting ARCH on 01349 868230 or emailing info@archhighland.org.uk
