Walks, talks, exhibitions in October

Although the Highland Archaeology Festival draws to a close on Sunday, 13th October, there are still a number of heritage courses and events in the remainder of the month!
Courses and Workshops:
Hilton Heritage, on Mondays, 10-12:30 at Hilton Community Centre, Inverness, starting 21 October until 16th December. This ARCH course is in two parts: the first from 21st October to 18th November provides an overview of the local heritage in its regional and national context. The second part, 25th November to 16th December offers an opportunity to research and learn about aspects of the heritage which are of interest. There will also be walks and visits to the museum and archive. Come to one or both parts.
Remembering Strathpeffer 2, on Wednesdays 10:30-12:30 at Strathpeffer Community Centre, from 30th October to 27th November. An opportunity to share memories and learn about physical remains in Strathpeffer and vicinity, creating a display for the Xmas market.
And beginning in November, Ancient Textile Crafts at Nairn Museum Museum on Saturdays from 9th to 30th November. This course run by Lynne McKeggie of ARCH will consist of a series of workshops, looking at different ancient textile crafts. In each workshop participants will learn how to do the craft and work towards making an item which they will be able to take home with them. During the workshops there will be a presentation about the history of the skill, all of which were developed in the Pre-historic, Early Historic and Medieval periods. This will then be related to the history and archaeology of the local area.
15th October, Precious Faces
1:30-3:30pm. Drop in family art workshop at Inverness Museum and Art Gallery, led by Anna Henderson of the Gallery of Modern Art, Glasgow Museums. Inspired by Craig Phadrig Hillfort, Thracian gold and contemporary sculpture. Create your own embossed metal portrait.

1 November: ‘New News from Clarkly Hill’ – Fraser Hunter

Walks and Cycle tours:
14th October: Ramble around Balmacara Estate

15th October: Cycling along the Beauly Firth
Led by Martin Hind, Ranger. 2-5pm. Meet at North Kessock Village Hall. Free.
15th October: Kernsary Walk and cream tea, Inverewe
11-3pm. A walk looking at natural history and archaeology including the Red Smiddy. Organised by National Trust for Scotland. Meet at Inverewe Visitor Centre. Cost £8 adults, £5 children, which includes afternoon tea and a scone. Advance booking essential on 01445 781229
20th October: walk to Urchany above Beauly

The Highland and Moray Heritage Partnership has just received funding for its ‘My Heart’s in the Highlands’ project, which will deliver a series of events to celebrate Homecoming 2014.
