Courses, Conferences, Talks ...
12 August 2010
As the summer digging season draws to a close (though there are still digs in Skye and Birnie), the progammes of talks, courses and conferences have started to be circulated. See the Events Diary Page for more details. September is Scottish Archaeology Month, and activities in the Highlands can be viewed on their website. It has to be said though that most activity will take place in October, and we're all awaiting the Highland Archaeology Festival programme. This should be available on the Highland Council website sometime in the next few weeks.
ARCH is offering a number of courses starting at the end of March:
Community Timelines
Wednesdays, Tomatin, 7-9pm, 1st September for 6 weeks OR
Thursdays, Auldearn, 10:30-12:30. 2nd September for 6 weeks
Interested in your past but confused about what happened when? Find out about the heritage in your area, from the earliest settlers to recent remains. Informal and lively, this six session course assumes no previous knowledge.
Pathways into the Past: Reporting on the Past
Tuesdays, Muir of Ord, 10-12:30am, 31st August for 6 weeks OR
Thursdays, Maryburgh, 7-9:30, 2nd September for 6 weeks
Previous Pathways into the Past courses looked at how to research and record historic routeways, both indoors and in the field. Working with others, the next step is to learn to pull it all together into a display and a report. New members welcome!
Pathways into the Past: Stepping into History
Tuesdays, Evanton, 31st August for 5 weeks
Taking ancient routeways as a theme, these sessions offer an introduction to landscape archaeology for all those who want to research and record their local archaeology.
In addition to the indoor sessions, there will be an opportunity to follow part of the routeway on the ground, identifying and recording features along the way.
ARCH will also be offering one event for Scottish Archaeology Week and 6 for the Highland Archaeology Festival:
Sunday, 19th September: Insight-On Site tour of Knockfarrel Iron Age hillfort
Monday, 4th October: Insight-On Site tour of Carn Irenan Chambered Cairn
Thursday, 7th October: Insight - On Site tour: walk around Dingwall
Thursday, 7th October: Talk at Tarbat Discovery Centre: Reading the Cross, an exploration of the reception to Christianity in Northern Pictland
Monday, 11th October: Insight-On Site tour: From Priests to Provosts, the Graveyards of Inverness
Tuesday, 12th October: Talk at Hilton Community Centre: Prehistoric Inverness
Thursday, 14th October: Tour and walk: A Walk on the Dark Side - in Black Rock Gorge, Evanton (with Bob Pegg of Walking the Stories)
We will also be at the What's New in Highland Archaeology Festival on 16th/17th September, with a display and an archaeological book sale - bring and buy!
Finally, ARCH will be providing courses for Kiltarlity Community Council's Boblainy Forest Community Archaeology Project, between now and the summer. The first part, Boblainy Heritage Overview will be on 6 Monday evenings beginning 30th August, 7-9pm at Kiltarlity Village Hall.
We will also be providing some taster sessions in Inverness with the WEA - details to follow.
Details on all these courses and events can be found in the Events section of the website.
